The formal Water Garden...
of stone, brick or concrete has long
been in favor in gardening circles. Natural streams, ponds and water gardens have also been used for the effective growing
of plants. Fortunately, where these are not available
it is possible without difficulty or much trouble
to make a satisfactory water garden, the size of
which will be determined by the space available.
In many European countries, too, water gardening
is much in favor while there are many historical
records going back to the earliest Biblical days
which show that water plants were grown for pleasure
and symbolic significance in simple and ornate water gardens. At various times, the
lotus and nymphaeas have been held in almost sacred
regard and illustrations of these flowers and water gardens are to
be found on ancient pottery and tapestry.
Water Gardens offer New Opportunities
Water Gardens play an important part in nature's landscape which
undoubtedly is why it appeals to garden lovers, offering as it
does, the opportunity of growing such a variety of interesting
and beautiful plants.
The Serenity of Water Gardens
A Water Garden also brings a peaceful satisfaction as one is able to
quietly observe the color, shape and varying habit of growth
of the inhabitants of the water garden.
It is therefore true to say that a water garden, such as any
of us can make, can be a great ornament and an outstanding
water feature in the garden, and one should not think of it as something which brings formality.
Increasing Interest in Water Gardens
It is a remarkable thing that every year at the Chelsea
Flower Show, the water gardens are constantly thronged
by garden lovers, proving, if proof is needed, how
great is the iinterest there is in water gardens.
