Submerged Oxygenating Aquatics |
P. crispus has prettily crimped foliage which passes from
green to a reddish hue in good light.
P. densus forms clusters of short, light green foliage, while
P. pectinatus has very fine foliage produced on well-branched
stems.
Ranunculus aquatilis is a really good plant which roots and
grows easily. It forms finely-cut leaves under the water while
those which appear on the surface have three lobes, which are
well shown up by the small white flowers. There are several
other species with a similar habit of growth.
Sagittarias, although not really grown as submerged plants,
are specially useful for keeping the water' in good condition,
charging it with oxygen throughout the whole year. There
are species suitable for both the outdoor pond and indoor
aquarium.
Tillaea. This is a genus of small plants mostly of use for
aquariums. T. recurva will grow at the pond side where it
makes carpets of light green foliage. It is suitable for both
shallow water and a depth of up to two feet.
Vallisneria is an easy-to-grow oxygenating plant. Most suit-
able for tropical aquariums. Known as Eel Grass and Ribbon
Grass, the male and female flowers are produced on separate
plants. After the flowers are fertilised, the stem contracts, caus-
ing the seed to drop to the bottom of the tank or pool, where
it ripens.
There are literally dozens of other good oxygenating plants
but sufficient has been said to show the interesting range
available.
