Calla palustris is the Bog Arum which is very suitable for marginal planting. It has a creeping rootstock, shiny heart- shaped leaves and smallish, white arum-like flowers which are sometimes followed by a cluster of red berries. It is said to attract water snails. The roots divide easily. Caltha. This is a family of plants ideal for growing on the margins of ponds and pools. They flower freely during spring and summer.

C. palustris is the Marsh Marigold or Kingcup which pro- duces its golden-yellow flowers from March to May. Grow- ing nine to fifteen inches high, it has good-sized, round leaves. It has several forms including plena, double flowers and semi- plena semi-double.

C. polypetala grows two to two and a half feet high with really large leaves and rich yellow flowers three inches in diameter.

Colocasia is a tuberous-rooted plant of easy culture and for growing in shallow water. Most varieties are suitable for the indoor aquarium. This includes C. esculenta with very large green leaves and having the common name of Elephant Ears because of the size and shape of the foliage.

Cotula coronopifolia is a first-class marginal plant with golden-yellow button-like flowers showing from March to October. It has the common name of Brass Buttons. Echinodorus. This is an easy-to-grow family of waterside plants very much like the alismas in appearance.

E. ranunculoides has narrow leaves and umbels of rosy- white flowers.

Gratiola officinalis is a fine edging plant most suitable for covering the muddy sides of streams and pools. It has cut- edged leaves from the axils of which spring small lilac flowers. Heteranthera reniformis is particularly suitable for the in- door water tank. It roots freely at the leaf joints and scrambles over the surface of the water. Not particularly pretty, it has smooth kidney-shaped leaves and little clusters of pale blue flowers.

Hydrocotyle vulgaris is the Marsh Pennywort which has creeping, rather weedy growth, with small round foliage and greenish-white flowers.

Hypericum elodes is another creeping plant with growths up to six inches long. The rounded leaves are covered with soft hairs, giving them a glaucous appearance. The bright yellow flowers appear from August onwards. These plants are specially useful for small pools and miniature water gardens and divide easily.

Juncus. This is the name of an interesting genus of hardy plants which flourish both in water and boggy ground. Many of the species are apt to become invasive and must be kept under control.
