J. effusus spiralis is a strong-growing rush being of an unusual appearance in that the evergreen stems grow in a cork-screw fashion. It grows about eighteen inches high as will most juncus. Loose plumes of brownish-red are produced.

J. scirpoides has rounded heads on compound flower spikes. Jussiaea grandiflora forms bushy growth two or three feet high. This produces golden-yellow flowers during the sum- mer and early autumn.

J. repens forms creeping or floating stems which need to be kept in check.

Limnanthemum is a genus containing some very pretty aquatics. They need to have their roots confined to a given space, otherwise they require regular thinning out.

L. indicum is the Water Snowflake with heart-shaped leaves and clusters of white flowers with yellow centres. It is ideal for a tank or tub in the greenhouse.

L. nymphaeoides is hardy and is known as the Water Fringe because of its daintily-fringed petals.

Limnocharis humboltii is a quick-growing perennial plant with broad floating foliage and .lots of golden-yellow poppy-like flowers.

Lycopus europacus is known as Gipsywort and is an aquatic with upright stems carrying deeply cut leaves and whorls of lilac flowers during July and August. It is a narcotic plant which should not be eaten.

Marsilea is a genus of half hardy plants easily cultivated in shallow tanks or pans. These flowerless plants are related to the ferns and have divided leaves resembling the four-leaved clover. Among the many species are M. crenulata, M. drummondii and M. quadrifolia.

Mentha aquatica is the Water Mint and grows one to three feet high with oval, cut-edged leaves and whorls of lilac flowers.

M. canadensis is shorter and has light purple flowers. M. sylvestris grows one and a half to two feet high and pro- duces spikes of lilac flowers.

Menyanthes trifoliata is the Bog Bean or Marsh Trefoil. An attractive marginal plant of spreading habit, it has olive-green foliage and bold clusters of fragrant snow-white flowers slightly tinged pink on the outside. These appear from May to July.

Myosotis palustris is the Water Forget-me-not, which is ideal for shady nooks and it will grow both in the water or on the edge of the pond or stream. Its bright blue flowers on nine- to twelve-inch stems, appear during May and June.

Myriophyllum proserpinacoides is the Parrot's Feather. It is a plant with graceful trailing stems clothed in feathery green foliage. The growths look particularly pleasing when seen rambling among the stems of upright-growing plants or draping over the edge of a small tub garden. The white flowers are inconspicuous.
