Orontium aquaticum is a handsome perennial growing
twelve to fifteen inches high, although it frequently floats on
the surface of the water. It has grey-blue foliage and a narrow
spadix covered with small yellow flowers.
Peltandra is a plant for shallow water and is a fine subject
for growing in medium-sized clumps. It has dark green sag-
gitatc leaves and white arum-like flowers. Propagation is by
division.
P. alba has a three-inch white spathe which is followed by a
head of red berries.
P. virginica is the green Arrow Arum and is capable of pro-
ducing leaves up to two feet long. The green spathe is
succeeded by green berries.
Pontederia cordata is a most charming hardy aquatic with
shiny dark green, luxuriant foliage. It produces spikes of
closely-packed blue flowers eighteen to twenty-four inches
high. It is a fine plant for the edge of the pond where the
water is three or four inches deep.
Potentilla palustre is the Marsh Cinquefoil. It is a water
plant with strawberry-like foliage and purplish flowers.
Ranunculus ligua grandiflora has large buttercup-like
flowers which appear from June to September, on two-and-a-
half-foot stems.
Rumex hydrolapathum is the Water Dock growing four or
five feet high wih large leaves which assume many handsome
tints in the early autumn. The flower spike should be re-
moved before it develops, otherwise there will be multitudes of
seedlings.
Sagittaria. This is a handsome aquatic which is very suit-
able for deep water.
S. latifolia varies in height from two to four feet. The dark
green, arrow-shaped leaves show up the clear white flowers to
great advantage.
S. macrophylla is a fine species but not reliably hardy. Of
Mexican origin, it has white flowers and large, arrow-shaped
leaves which pass to yellow and bronze as they age.
5. sagittifolia has tall leaves and white flowers with purple
centres. It is quite hardy and must be kept within bounds.
Saururus is a hardy plant for shallow water and is known as
Lizard's Tail. This handsome subject produces terminal
racemes of flowers and is easy to propagate by division.
S. cernuus usually grows up to two feet high and produces
spikes of small, nodding, fragrant flowers with heart-shaped
leaves.
S. chinensis has broad, cordate leaves and spikes of creamy
flowers.
Scutellarla galericulata is a lovely plant a foot or more high
with large bright blue flowers and tapering leaves.
Senecio japonicus is a really decorative plant for the edge of
the pool or stream. It will often reach five feet and produces
spikes of rich orange flowers.
