Spartina townsendii is known as the Mat Weed, its only
value being its ability to bind the soil on loose banks of pools
and streams.
Zizania aquatica is a very pretty grass for the side of the
pond or stream. Although an annual, it will grow six to eight
feet high, the reed-like stems producing broad flat leaves and
panicles of flowers. Seed is dropped in the water in early
spring, and in streams it should be placed where it will not be
moved by the current.
